REVIEWS
“Nail-biting play about corruption gnawing away throughout a class action suit against a major chemical company - Huffington Post
“This is a tense and enlightening evening in the theater that demonstrates the startling inner workings of the legal system even in what seems like an open and shut case…The engrossing and gripping play builds to a shocking and surprising ending, one you won’t see coming and that is revealing of how the legal system works.” - TheatersScene.net
“Norman Shabel takes intriguing and timely look at the inner workings of our justice system in this sophisticated thrill ride” – Broadwayworld.com
“A Class Act” Is A High Stakes Ride Through The American Justice System...." - South Florida Theater Magazine. Read More
In a story ‘ripped right from today’s headlines’ a major chemical company pours cancer-causing waste into the water supply… A CLASS ACT is a taut drama that takes a timely look at the inner workings of our justice system when a leading law firm brings a class action suit against a major company that has been pouring contaminated chemicals into the drinking water in states across the country causing severe illnesses and death. Who wins? Who loses? Who gets justice in the end? It examines a world in which greed pervades, the loyal suffer and morality is always relative.
A Note from the Playwright:
After many years of successful trial law, my office was faced with clients who suffered from illness and death due to deadly poisoned drinking water in New Jersey, and in states across the country.
This play involves the battleground of these trial lawyers and the corporations who were permeating the rivers with their chemicals and poisoning the people who were drinking the water.
The play’s battle takes place around conference tables at the law firm and the
corporate offices, when the participants battle for each of their many poisoned
clients against the unforgiving corporate culprits. The last segment of the play
reveals to the audience many surprises including an astonishing plot twist.
Today’s news is full of reports of contaminated water around the country, including
Biscayne Bay. Unfortunately the world has not changed since I originally wrote the
play, and corporate greed still rules the day. A Class Act depicts the war-like
negotiations between the corporate non-caring criminals and the lawyers who
represent the dying public.
Normand Shabel
A Note from the Director:
What makes A Class Act so compelling to me is that it refuses to hand us heroes and
villains. Instead, we are presented with lawyers, executives, and victims, each
operating within a system that rewards winning more than it does doing what’s right.
As a director, I was drawn to the challenge of exploring these gray areas—of
staging a story where the courtroom is not just a place of legal reckoning. I would like
to thank Norman for this wonderful opportunity. Enjoy the show!
